リンゴ農家は、毎年リンゴの木を手入れしなければならない。
で、 切り倒す古木や剪定枝をただでくれると言ってくれる。
彼にしてみれば、それを片づけて持ち去ってくれるなら大助かりだ。
そんな彼は、 時にリンゴを１箱お土産にくれる。
私にしてみれば、それは薪についてくる願ってもないおまけだ。
木を倒し、丸太にして、枝を始末し、 それを自分の軽トラック１台分積み込むのに数時間かかる。
軽トラ１台分のそれは、だいたい１ヶ月分の薪だ。
家の薪ストーブが２台 （デファイアントとアンコール）になってから、毎年軽トラ7～８台分の薪が必要になった。
その１年分の原木は、 ３～４日で家に運び込むことができる。
リンゴの木は上等な薪になる。
白い灰がたくさん残るが、火持ちがいいし火力もある。

 

その果樹園へは、軽トラで１時間以上かかる。
わたしは弁当を用意し、木を切りに行く。
或る日の現場は、 急で細い路を登らなければならなかった。
しかも、帰路はバックで戻るしかなかった。
雪が激しく降りはじめた。昼には膝丈ほどに積もった。
３メートル先さえ見えなかった。
太枝に雪が重く積もり、びしょ濡れで厄介な仕事になった。
そこで、休憩をとった。私は座り込んで、 熱いティーを入れた。
ほんの数分前まで、私はチェンソーの咆吼（ほうこう）を谷に轟かしていた。
今は静寂があり、雪がただ降りしきっていた。
大気は新鮮で、冷たくて美味しかった。

丁度その時だった。
猿の大きな一群が山林からゆっくりとした足取りでやって来た。
遊び盛りの若猿は雪と戯れている。
背中に小猿を負ぶった母猿はリンゴの太枝で何かを噛んでいる。
灰色の髭を豊かにたくわえたお祖父さん猿は、賢そうで威厳に満ちていた。
壮健な若猿と成猿は群れを組んで、橇で遊んでいるように山を滑り下りていた。
猿の群れが、わたしの目の前１メートルまで近づいてきた。
雪まみれになっていた私を、猿は気にも止めなかった。
音を立てずに、私はじっとしていた。
とはいえ、野生動物がすべてそうであるように、 彼らは用心深い。
一族を危険から守るために歩哨を立てていた。
そして、橇遊びを楽しんだ。
しばらくして、彼らは帰っていった。
猿の群れに会えたことは感動だった…。

来年の暖房とクッキングに使う燃料を調達するために、わたしは仕事に戻った。
帰路はまるで遭難だった。 肝を冷やした！
雪が深くなっていた。
急な坂をバックで戻るので、重たくなった軽トラが何度もスタックしそうになった。

 

不幸なことに、ファーマーが木をあまり伐らない年がある。
そんなときには、木を買うことになる。
たいていは、自分で玉切りして自分で割る。
気に入る薪を入手するのは難しい。売られている薪は細すぎるのだ。
その上、 薪に好まざるカミキリムシの幼虫が入っていることがある。
もしも原木を買うんだったら、伐りたての樹齢２０～３０年のジャパニーズ・オーク （楢）。３メートル物がいい。この木は最高級の燃料だ。
簡単に割れるし、火持ちがいい。
じっくりとなめらかに放熱し、 火力の強い熾き火になる。
楢の原木を丸太置き場に運ぶ。
この木は堅いので、他の木よりも切るのに手間がかかる。
そして重い。 薪小屋に運んで積み上げるのも重労働になる。
楢の薪は乾燥に時間を要する。
その分、薪として供するまでには多くの肉体労働を強いられる…。
しかし、私にしてみればそれはそれで楽しみだ。
その分、自然とコンタクトする機会を多く与えらているように感じる。
薪の世話は、 屋外仕事に興じるよいチャンスである。

薪代にいくら支払っているのか、私には分からない。
或る年は３万円かも知れないし、 次の年は一銭も払っていないかも知れない。
とはいえ、もしも薪を買うなら年に８万円ぐらいは必要だろう。
そこで、 財布の500円硬貨を使いたがらないという、奇妙な癖が身に付いてしまった。

Defiant Savings Bank

 

Every year an apple farmer in the area or some neighbor needs his trees cleared. With luck he will ask me if I would like to take the wood for free. It is a big help to them to have me cut and haul it away. Sometimes he will give me a box of apples to take home. For me this is a good source of premium firewood. It takes a few hours to fell, cut, split, load enough firewood to fill my Kei Truck. I figure a kei truck full will last almost a month. Since I have 2 stoves (Defiant and Encore) I need at least 10 truck loads a year. If I am lucky I can make 2 or 3 trips in a day. I usually can get my a years worth of wood in 3 or 4 days. Apple wood is great firewood; it burns long and hot. It leaves a lot of very white ash though, and I don’t like to use it for open oven wood because the farmer probably sprays a lot of chemicals on it, and I don’t want that on my food.

 

The orchard could be over an hour away. I pack a lunch and go to spend the day cutting the trees. One time the farmer’s field was way way up a steep narrow dirt road and the only way out was to drive backwards. It started snowing very heavily and by noon the snow was up to my knees. It weighed heavily on the branches and made the work wet and hard. I couldn’t see 3 meters in front of me. So I sat down and made a cup of hot tea and rested. Just a few moments earlier I was filling the valley with the roar of my chain saw. Now there was no sound but of the snowflakes falling around me and the air was fresh and cold-delicious. Just then a large tribe of monkeys ambled from the mountainous forest. Youngsters frolicked in the snow and mothers with infants on their backs-chewed on the apple branches. The old grey bearded grandfathers looked wise and majestic. Robust youths and adults were actually sledding down the mountain in the snow and having a party. They came to less than a meter in front of me. I was all covered with snow and they didn’t notice me and I didn’t make a sound. . They were wary like all animals. They had sentries to keep security watch to warn the tribe of danger. They sled and played in the snow. After a while they went on their way and I went back to cutting my energy supply for the next year’s heating and cooking. amazing! Getting down was almost a disaster because of the snow because the heavy truck almost got stuck going down that steep slope backwards. Seeing those monkeys was fascinating.

 

Unfortunately some years the farmer doesn’t have very many trees to cut and I might need to buy some wood. I usually try to cut and chop my own wood. It is hard to find wood pre cut the way I like it. Most of the firewood for sale is split too small for me. And often there are unwanted insects in the wood. If I do have to buy wood I choose to freshly felled 3 meter long 20 to 30 year old Japanese oak (Nara) This is a premium fuel. It is pretty easy to split and it has a long stable burn. It puts out an even heat and makes good hot coals. I can get the Nara delivered right to my wood- lot. This wood is hard and it takes more time to cut then most other woods and it is heavy, which means a lot of hard work to carry and stack it. It takes a lot of time and physical effort to put up a years supply of wood… But for me it is enjoyable and it makes me feel more connected to nature. It is chance to work outside.

 

I never know how much I will need to spend on wood. It might cost 30,000 yen one year and nothing the next year. If I need to buy all of my wood, it could cost as much as 90,000 yen a year! So I developed a funny habit of obsessively refusing to spend the 500 coins in my wallet – even though it is illogical. The sign on the cash register says 450 yen. There in my wallet is a perfect 500 coin asking to be taken out and placed on the counter. But I am stubborn. Instead I take out a one, five or even a ten thousand yen note to pay for a 450 yen item.
