I rescued this from a recycle shop ‘junk’ section recently…
It’s an old Hitachi Steam Iron ‘IS-320’.
I can’t find out anything about it on-line… I am guessing its from the 1960’s (like me).

この前、リサイクルショップのジャンクコーナーでこのアイロンを見つけた。

ネットで調べてもはっきりしなかったけど、
1960年代のものじゃないかと思う（私と同じ）。

I bought it mostly because I loved the design and the packaging, it was NIB ‘new in box’ or NOS ‘new old stock’ as we say in English.
I couldn’t resist trying it out once (I do most of the weekly ironing in our house, it’s ‘therapy’) and I was delighted to find that it works much better than my modern lightweight iron.

Old irons are quite heavy and iron clothes very well without much effort (everyones Grandmother knew that of course!).
 

こういうのを見ると、デザインやパッケージに魅かれてたいてい買ってしまう。
英語では
NIB=new in box
NOS=new old stock
などという。

そして一度使ってみないことには落ち着かない。
（毎週のアイロンがけはわたしにとって「セラピー」である）
これを見つけたとき、モダンで軽い今のアイロンよりずっと良さそうだと思った。

オールドスタイルのアイロンはすごく重いから、
よけいな力を入れなくても上手にシワが伸びる。
（グランマ世代ならご存知ですね！）

 
I just love the design of it, the chrome… red lettering on chromed plastic… black and cream Bakelite… and the electric cord too!
A great period in design history!

この、クロムを使ったデザインが好きだ。
プラスティックの上にメッキして、そこに捺された赤い文字。
黒とクリーム色のベークライト。
そして電気コード。
デザインの歴史の中でもイケてる時代の産物！

 
The instructions front cover shows a ‘happy waving woman’ who seems really pleased to be doing the ironing… of course this is marketing!  There are no women like that in real life!

取扱説明書には楽しげに手を振る女性のイラスト。
アイロンがけが楽しくってしょうがないみたい。
…もちろんこれはフィクションであり宣伝。
リアルな生活の中じゃ、こんな奥さんいないよね！

 
In the winter you can heat up a cast iron ‘iron’ on the wood stove… the way everyone used to.
There are even old wood stoves called ‘laundry stoves’ which were specially designed for heating up several irons at once and also drying laundry…

冬、薪ストーブのグリドルの上に置いて熱してもいい。
昔の人はよくしたものだ。
昔のストーブには「ランドリーストーブ」と呼ばれたものもあった。
一度に数台のアイロンをヒートアップできるデザインで、
洗濯物を乾かすのにも一役買った。
